Scholarship Overview
- The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are funded through the New Zealand Aid Programme and administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
- These scholarships enable international students from selected developing countries to study at a New Zealand university, pursuing either undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
- Eligible citizens from developing countries get an opportunity to study fulltime at a New Zealand or Pacific education institution.

What does the scholarship cover?
- Full tuition fees
- Living allowance/stipend
- An establishment allowance to help with set up costs
- Medical insurance (in New Zealand)
- Tutoring costs (additional academic support)
- Travel to and from your own country
- Travel insurance
- Travel home during the scholarship period (one or two trips depending on the length).
- Reintegration allowance after you return to your home country.

- There are different scholarship allocations for every country. Check the specific country scholarship page.
Which countries are targeted?
Pacific Countries
- Fiji (postgraduate only), Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, North Pacific (Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands), Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.
Asian Countries
- Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam
Am I Eligible to Apply?
Note: You must complete the eligibility questionnaire before you can apply for a Scholarship. To qualify for this scholarship, you must:
- be 18 years old and above when you start your scholarship;
- have resided in your home country for two years prior to applying (applicants working for their home country on a diplomatic assignment and their dependants are exempt from this requirement);
- be prepared to contribute to your country’s social or economic development for at least two years after completing your scholarship study period;
- clearly describe in your application how you will contribute towards your country’s social and economic development after your scholarship;
- not be currently serving in the military;
- meet both the academic entry requirements and the English language requirements determined by your preferred education institutions;
- want to study at a level that is listed as available for your country for the scholarship that you intend to apply for;
- meet immigration requirements for a student visa to New Zealand or the Pacific (i.e. medical checks, etc.);
- be committed to returning to your country for a minimum of two years at the end of the scholarship to contribute to your country’s development;
- have relevant work experience if applying for a postgraduate program (work experience can be paid, unpaid or voluntary);
- want to study in a new country;
- be desiring to study in a similar field to where you have already worked.

- Looking to undertake a qualification that progresses on from your highest qualification.
- 39 years or younger when the scholarship starts.
- A balance of male and female scholars.
